Robyn Breshears and Michelle Fittro of Arvest Bank served as volunteer judges at the 70th annual Arkansas DECA State Career Development Conference in Fayetteville, Ark. on March 6, 2016 at the Chancellor Hotel.

DECA is an educational association of junior high, high school and college students preparing for careers in marketing, management and entrepreneurship-related fields. The mission is to prepare emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe.

During the State Career Development Conference, over 550 students from junior high and high schools across the state competed in over 50 events. These events require students to perform in front of a panel of judges coming from many different corporate backgrounds.

Gail Betts, the Arkansas State DECA advisor, recently said, “The real-world application experience to which DECA exposes Arkansas’ young scholars better prepares them for a career in marketing and management, and to change the world through innovation and entrepreneurship. Without business and educational partners like Robyn and Michelle to serve as judges, our students would miss out on these educational opportunities. These partners are helping to shape our future leaders in business and industry.”

In addition to the competition, students worked hard on civic consciousness efforts, and collected money for Make-A-Wish, Arkansas Children’s Hospital and Muscular Dystrophy Association through various events and efforts throughout the year. They also collected crayons and coloring books for patients at Arkansas Children’s Hospital.

The two-day conference was full of experiences from networking and making new contacts, to learning valuable leadership skills students can take with them into their professional career. Competitors from the Arkansas DECA State Career Development Conference who advance to the International Career Development Conference will compete against the best and brightest aspiring marketing and management professionals in the country April 23-26, 2016 in Nashville, Tenn.
