Arvest Spices Things Up at the Frisco Festival

Wednesday, August 31 at 07:32 AM

For 27 years, the city of Rogers has been celebrating its heritage with the annual Frisco Festival.  Each year citizens of Rogers and surrounding communities converge on downtown Rogers the last weekend of August to enjoy rides, live music, talent shows, vendor booths and of course food.

For the sixth year in a row, Arvest sponsored the Chilisalsapeno contest at the Frisco Festival.  This year 6 different banks, businesses and civic organizations from Northwest Arkansas competed to decide who had the best chili.  Attendees were allowed to sample chili and vote for their favorite recipe.  They also voted on what booth was most visually appealing in the “Showmanship” category. Likewise, judges tasted the chili and cast their votes for the best chili.

The Arvest booth featured famous people including Marilyn Monroe, James Dean and Audrey Hepburn. Attendees were able to walk the red carpet as special guest of Arvest and were greeted by, “Welcome to Hollywood” as they walked up to try a taste of the Arvest Famous Chili. The crowd loved and enjoyed the booth so much that they voted it #1 in the Showmanship category.

In addition to the chili competition, a salsa competition was also held.  Members of the community were asked to make their best salsa and allow judges to determine who makes the best salsa.

And as if the chili and the salsa hadn’t added enough spice to the day, five men entered the jalapeno eating contest.  Each contestant had two minutes to eat as many hot, spicy peppers as possible.

With all the mixtures of spices from the three contest Arvest came together and provided food, fun, conversation and plenty of HEAT!

Arvest Tests Benefits of LEED

Tuesday, August 30 at 02:47 PM

Bank Technology News recently posted a case study article on Arvest Bank and our efforts to bring LEED standards to some of our newest bank branches.  For those interested in learning more about LEED and why Arvest is developing LEED facilities, this article is an interesting read.

Problem: The benefits of LEED certifications are still hard to measure.
Solution: Build new branches at varying LEED levels to do real-world, cost-benefit analysis of the top-spec sites against those certified at lower LEED standards.

The jury's decidedly out on whether buildings constructed to LEED specifications are truly more efficient than those that aren't. That's because LEED buildings (those that have been certified "green" under the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design system) are always certified before any energy usage is actually measured that could conclusively prove that LEED works.

That lack of data has led Arvest Bank of Fayetteville, Ark., to test LEED concepts in its own branches. The bank is engaged in a multiyear cost-benefit analysis on LEED buildings to try to figure out the optimum spec to build to, weighing construction costs against savings on energy and facilities usage over time. Arvest is doing this by analyzing the energy consumption and building expenses across four branches built to different LEED-certified levels.

Arvest uses LEED solutions, like underground cisterns, to collect rainwater to flush toilets and irrigate landscaping at two of its gold-certified branches — one in Fayetteville and another in Springfield, Mo.

Yet Arvest is eschewing gold certification at two of its newest branches — one in Springfield, on which it broke ground June 6, and another under construction in Broken Arrow, Okla. — to instead aim for the lowest LEED level, known simply as "certified," to have a baseline means for comparison.

"After completing the four projects we'll evaluate all the materials, energy savings and costs, and then make a determination as to whether we would always try to hit LEED-certified gold or not, or always have rain harvesting systems," says Brent Vinson, site and planning coordinator at Arvest.

One of Arvest's rain harvesting cisterns recently made a bit of Arkansas history. Powering flushed toilets in the state with rainwater had typically required use of municipalities' filtration systems, or companies had to install an on-site filter for the intake water. "But for a small bank branch [the latter's] just not feasible," Vinson says. "So our engineer went to bat for us and lobbied the Department of Health and finally they allowed us to do it."

HSA Engineering, a consultant Arvest hired to support the project, successfully obtained an exemption from Arkansas' plumbing code from the state's Department of Health Review Board. After that, HSA successfully petitioned to make rainwater harvesting legal by pushing the state legislature to pass a bill in 2009 that encoded the practice into the state's plumbing guidelines, which were finalized in May of last year. Rainwater harvesting systems can be self-sustaining and cheap: Processing and treating water which need not be potable is considered expensive and wasteful by conservation proponents.

Arvest's Joyce Boulevard branch in Fayetteville became the first building of its type in Arkansas where a legal rainwater flushing system was used without a filter, Vinson says.

Arvest's newest branches are being built with other LEED-standard components, including low-volatile organic compounds that carry or emit fewer harmful chemicals than those typically contained in paint, glues, adhesives, carpet and millwork. Plus, the $11 billion-asset bank is recycling any construction materials that can be repurposed or reused. LED lights and heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems that power down or turn off depending on the time of day — or in some cases, when a room is vacant — are also included.

Another of Arvest's crucial LEED-certified components are bioswales, which are essentially modified ditches designed to remove pollutants and silt from rainwater. Instead of using the town's storm sewer and piping system in which the water ends up in a lake or stream, a bioswale channels and holds water on-site, letting it percolate into the ground to replenish the water table. The water is filtered typically through a layer of grass and then an engineered field of sand or some similar base below, which works to remove pollutants such as car oils.

Solar panels and geothermal cooling and heating, in which underground pipes feed ground air that naturally stays at a constant temperature, have been discussed, Vinson says. But business cases that would green-light such projects await development — solar is expensive and Arkansas' rocky ground makes channeling pipes tough. Regardless, Arvest's LEED efforts have so far garnered intangible marketing benefits. "People have actually come to the bank because they said they know we're doing this," Vinson says. "There have been enough of these comments that we know we're making a difference."

Spotlight on Roberts Philpott Eye Associates, Siloam Springs, AR

Tuesday, August 30 at 07:57 AM

Roberts Philpott Eye Associates first opened as Roberts Eye Clinic in 1974 by Dr. Bob G. Roberts when he completed Southern College of Optometry after graduating from Ozark Academy in Gentry and college at Union College in Lincoln, Nebraska.

It wasn’t difficult to decide where to locate his practice, Roberts said.

“I was born in Fort Smith and have been a Razorback all my life,” he said.

Since then, Gentry native and partner Dr. Greg Philpott has joined the group after completing his biology degree at University of Central Arkansas and Northeastern State University’s College of Optometry in 1999.

The practice prides itself in providing complete family eye care for all ages in one location.

The two full-time optometrists and a full-time surgeon on staff, along with the extremely knowledgeable and friendly staff, provide the extended hours and services upon which area residents have come to depend. Even the surgical care is provided through the local hospital, Roberts said.

The diversity of high tech equipment in the office has really set Roberts Philpott Eye Associates apart from the competition, something that would have been difficult to obtain without assistance from Arvest Bank, Roberts said.

The practice has banked with Arvest since 1991.

“Arvest has always supported all of our banking needs. It has played a big part in helping us to achieve the level of success that we have had,” Roberts said.

Arvest Kansas City Spotlights Jasper's Italian Restaurant

Monday, August 29 at 09:03 AM

Jasper Mirabile, Sr., founder of Kansas City’s world-renowned Jasper’s Italian Restaurant, had a saying: “bere e mangiare bene”—drink and eat well. Through his sons Jasper Jr. and Leonard, and now his grandson Jasper III, that mantra lives on into its fourth generation.

Jasper’s Restaurant represents a rich family history that began long before the opening of the first Jasper’s in 1954. Over the years, generations of Mirabile's have worked together and traveled the world in search of new flavors and dishes to bring a world-class restaurant to the Midwest. Since the beginning, Jasper’s has earned numerous awards and accolades from the hospitality industry press and their customers. A four-star rating from The Kansas City Star, the coveted four-diamond rating from AAA, and most recently, Kansas City’s Best Italian Restaurant by Zagat’s in the 2011 guide.

The Mirabile’s success stems from the dedication of the family to offer an inviting atmosphere and un-compromising standards for quality in their authentic Italian food and service. The dedication to their craft is legendary.  The secret?  They call it “MITH,” which stands for “Mirabile in the House”.  In over 57 years of service to Kansas City diners, there has been a Mirabile family member “in the house” every night at the restaurant.  A streak that will continue tonight…when you dine at Jasper’s!  But, even with over 17,000 nights with at least one of the Mirabile’s on the floor, both Jasper Jr. and his brother Leonard are quick to credit a core staff of long time employees with creating the Jasper’s “experience” that so many Kansas Citians love.  Several of their staff have been with the team for over 25 years, including their long-time kitchen general Marvin Lewis, who has been with Team Jasper for over 35 years!

In the end, it’s all about what comes to the table from the well-worn pans in Jasper’s Kitchen. One of the signatures of this Italian gem is the tasty balance of old school tradition, blended with specialty creations that you won’t find anywhere else. And we’re not just talking KC! You won’t find them anywhere in the country. Jasper’s exclusives, such as SCAMPI ALLA LIVORNESE and Lobster Cappuccino join the table alongside new Jasper’s hits such as fresh tableside mozzarella and keep the legions of Jasper’s devotees coming back again and again.

The Mirabile’s love Kansas City and love doing business with great companies like Arvest Bank.  They look forward to seeing you soon!  One thing is for sure…..one of them will be in the house!

Arvest Fayetteville Spotlights Houndstooth Clothing Company

Friday, August 26 at 01:50 PM

In 1992, Houndstooth Clothing Company opened for business in a small storefront just off the downtown square in Fayetteville and the company’s founder, Michael Baker, was a native to Northwest Arkansas. Houndstooth t-shirts became a hit with students at the university, and word spread as these students carried the brand beyond Fayetteville.

In 1999, Houndstooth began producing a line of licensed apparel for Razorback fans and soon secured a strong following. Houndstooth shirts from the Razorback collection are a "must have" for the true Hog fan.

Original Houndstooth designs have their own passionate following with themes that communicate with customers on a personal level. Product lines that celebrate the golden age of sport, the great outdoors, and vintage American style have made loyal patrons of the Houndstooth faithful.

Houndstooth continues to build on its reputation for unique design and quality construction. Products are now available at seven, company-owned, retail locations (including the original location at 29 N. Block Ave. in Fayetteville), and through this website, houndstooth.com.  Custom screen printing is also now available.

“Arvest has been a partner in every sense of the word,” Baker said. “They continually make the effort to understand and meet our needs. Businesses are ultimately defined by the quality of their people, and this is what makes Arvest the best of the best.”  Houndstooth has been a banking customer of Arvest for over a decade, beginning in 2000.
