Arvest to End Student Loan Program Due to New Legislation

Wednesday, March 31 at 08:14 PM

Arvest Bank will no longer be able to originate federally-insured student loans after June 30, 2010 as a result of the Congressional decision to eliminate the Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP).  This legislative move will end the ability to originate these loans for not only Arvest, but for banks across the country.

We are notifying our current student loan customers, colleges and universities of the change in a letter providing information and guidance relating to the new legislation.

With this change, banks will no longer be able to originate new federally-insured student loans after June 30, 2010.  Arvest is currently the largest student lender in Arkansas and the third largest lender in Oklahoma.

We anticipate that current outstanding student loans will not be affected by the new legislation.

In addition, we are encouraging all students or potential students to contact their school’s financial aid office or website for assistance in obtaining future educational loans. For more information, students can contact the U.S. Department of Education at (800) 557-7392 or www.loanconsolidation.ed.gov or their local Arvest Bank Loan Officer for additional assistance.

We are proud of our work over the years with the thousands of students in our communities who have advanced their education with the assistance of student loans.  We would like thank all these students, colleges and universities for partnering with Arvest Bank.

Arvest Making Great Strides In Our Community

Tuesday, March 30 at 05:01 PM

Fifty years ago, most children with Cystic Fibrosis did not live long enough to attend elementary school, but today, as a result of dramatic improvements in research and care, the median age of survival is 37 years old.  The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is the leading organization devoted to curing and controlling cystic fibrosis.  They fund research and support and accredit a nationwide network of care centers, which provide vital treatments and other Cystic Fibrosis resources to patients and families.

Little Rock, Kansas City, and Benton County Arvest Banks currently have walk teams participating in the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s largest national fundraising event, Great Strides®. In fact, because of their support, they have been recognized as a national team sponsor. This cause is very important being that Cystic Fibrosis has touched the lives of several Arvest Associates.  Burt Stacy's grandson, Trey, and Haskell Anderson’s son, Reece, have both been diagnosed with this disease and so it is very near and dear to their Arvest Bank’s family heart.

You, too, can be a part of the Great Strides® walk on the following dates where you’ll be sure to see friendly Arvest faces:

Kansas City - Theis Park - May 1st
Little Rock - Little Rock Zoo - May 15th
Bentonville - Bentonville Plaza - August 28th
Benton - Tyndall Park - August 28th

Arvest Kansas City is also allowing their associates to wear jeans on Fridays in April and making a Walk-Of-Fame Wall to raise donations as well as handing out water, snacks and lots of encouragement at the Great Strides® walk check points.

If you would like to help but won’t be able to participate in the walk, you can contribute by purchasing $1 pin up roses in all the central Arkansas branches until the end of March.  All the money raised will be donated to the Great Strides® Little Rock. (Would you like to know why the rose has become the symbol of the Foundation?  Click here to read a very touching story.)

We are proud of the Arvest Bank teams that are not only making a difference for this very worthy cause, but for also being an example of true community involvement.

Helpful Tips for a Safe Vacation

Tuesday, March 30 at 08:56 AM

As the summer months are approaching, it's time to start thinking about that family vacation once again. A vacation should be a time of rest and relaxation, not a time to worry about the safety and security of your funds and bank accounts. There are a few things to consider before planning your next trip:

1. In order to protect our customers, Arvest Bank has a fraud alert team that monitors your card activity. If you're visiting areas outside of your home region, it is possible that transactions on your card may be deemed suspicious and your card deactivated for your protection. In order to avoid this, just give us a quick call or email to let us know that you will be traveling, including your destination and dates of departure and return.

2. Never leave your wallet or purse unattended in your vehicle, especially where it can be seen. Thieves prey on vacationers and know that many people leave valuables in their cars while visiting amusement parks, water parks, etc.

3. Always know where your cards are. Most places allow you to swipe your card yourself when making a purchase so it never leaves your possession. But in some instances, like restaurants, the cashier must take your card in order to run it. In this situation, try to look for suspicious activity, such as the cashier possibly writing down your card number or using their cell phone to take a picture of the card.

4. Before going on vacation, make copies of all your debit and credit cards (front and back) that you will be taking with you. Keep these in a safe, secure place, such as the safe in the hotel room. If your wallet or purse is stolen, you will be able to call the company immediately to cancel your cards by using your card number and the telephone number on the back of the card.

5. When you return from your vacation, check your Online Banking for any fraudulent activity, or for constant monitoring, use Arvest Mobile Banking.

If you are planning an extended vacation, an excellent way to help protect your accounts from fraud is the Arvest Spending Card. This reloadable prepaid debit card can be linked to an account, solely for your vacation funds. The Spending Card is also a great way to save up for a big trip and stay on budget while vacationing!

Also don’t forget that funds can always be transferred into your vacation account via Online Banking, Mobile Banking, or contacting us.

If you become a victim of fraud, please contact us as soon as possible. We will work with you in order to cancel your Arvest cards and dispute any fraudulent activity.

Getting It Right Before Retirement - Roth IRAs

Friday, March 26 at 11:40 AM

Did you know that many people spend more time planning their vacation than planning for retirement?  Although there are many ways to save for your retirement, if you are like most people, you aren’t taking full advantage of them.  For example, do you understand the basics of a Roth IRA?  If not, here’s a little Roth IRA 101.

Right now, you may be wondering why you should invest in a Roth IRA if you currently have a retirement plan with your employer.  The Roth IRA has many benefits that other retirement plans don’t have, and chief among them is the fact that any investment earnings may accumulate tax-free. In other words, your Roth IRA has the opportunity to grow without incurring any taxes and can be distributed to you tax free, if certain conditions are met.

While there are advantages to owning a Roth IRA, there are also some rules to think about before you decide this is the account for you.  First, not everyone can take advantage of a Roth IRA.  You or your spouse must have earned income or compensation – this includes wages, tips or salary. However, be aware that earned income or compensation does not include rental, interest, dividend, pension annuity or deferred compensation income. Second, your modified adjusted gross income cannot exceed certain limits. For single people, your modified adjusted gross income must be less than $114,000 and $166,000 for married couples filing jointly.

Contributions you make to the account are not tax deductible but may be withdrawn any time without tax or penalty. Before taking withdrawals from your Roth IRA you need to determine if you are receiving a “qualified distribution.” Any withdrawal that is not a “qualified distribution” can result in income taxes and IRS penalties.  For example, any earnings on your principal will be subject to income taxes should you decide to withdraw them prior to the five-year holding period or before age 59 ½ (contact your state department for state taxation rules). In addition, these earnings are also generally subject to a 10% IRS penalty.

Tax and penalty free withdrawal of your Roth IRA earnings for “qualified distributions” can be made once a five-year holding period is satisfied and one of the following applies: you have reached age 59 ½, you have become disabled, the funds are used for a first-time home purchase (subject to a $10,000 lifetime limit) or the funds are distributed to a beneficiary after your death.

After thinking over the rules, if you are eligible for a Roth IRA you may be wondering how much you can contribute. For 2008, you may make regular contributions that do not exceed $5,000. If you are 50 or older, you can also make “catch-up” contributions of up to $1,000 per year for a total contribution of $6,000.

A couple of other important items worth noting – contributions to your employer’s retirement plan do not exclude you from making contributions to a Roth IRA, and owning a traditional IRA does not prevent you from setting up a Roth IRA either (although contributing to a traditional IRA for the same year will limit the amount you can contribute to a Roth IRA).

Whether or not you decide a Roth IRA is the right retirement account for you, it’s always smart to plan ahead and save money for the future. Never underestimate the importance of saving for retirement and using a variety of investment vehicles to achieve your goals.

Winter Bunny Reminds Us Spring is Here

Thursday, March 25 at 12:50 PM

Even as the first day of Spring appeared on the calendar, many Arvest communities were blanketed by one last snowfall.  An Arvest associate submitted this photo of a winter bunny which reminds us that as Easter approaches there are new banking needs springing up everywhere.

Some things to remember this Spring include:

  • The 2010 Homebuyer Tax Credit is set to expire in April.  Your binding contract must be written by April 30, 2010 to qualify.  Contact an Arvest Mortgage lender to pre-qualify for your home loan today.
  • Spring is a common time to make home improvements, start a landscaping project, or buy a new car - talk to us if you need financing.
  • Tax time is a good reminder to check up on your retirement plan or overall savings goals.  Visit our Retirement Planning website or meet with a local Client Advisor for a personal consultation.

Enjoy the warmer weather coming our way and let us help you find the best financial solutions for your needs!
