Arvest Bank and FHLBank of Dallas Award a $430,000 Affordable Housing Grant to Supportive Living Project for Seniors

DALLAS, Feb. 27, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Northwest Regional Housing Development Corporation was awarded a $430,000 Affordable Housing Program (AHP) grant from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas (Bank) supported by Arvest Bank in Lowell, Arkansas.

The AHP grant will be used toward the construction of Maple Esplanade, a 50-unit supportive living development targeting low- and moderate-income elderly individuals in northwest Arkansas.

The facility will offer supportive services to seniors, who are able to live independently, but need assistance with some of their daily activities. The project also receives low-income housing tax credits, which will assist in keeping the rent affordable for the seniors.

"Arvest Bank has been instrumental in Northwest Regional Housing Development Corporation's development of Maple Esplanade, a 50 unit affordable assisted living project in Harrison," said Ken McDowell, Executive Director of the Northwest Regional Housing Development Corporation. "In addition to purchasing tax credits to provide much needed equity in the project, Arvest's sponsorship of our application has resulted in the $430,000 AHP grant. This beautiful facility will allow low- to moderate-income elderly access to assisted living services and will prevent premature institutionalization of many frail elderly in northwest Arkansas."

The Bank returns 10 percent of its profits each year to the communities served by member institutions in the form of AHP grants issued through its member financial institutions. In 2008, the Bank, through its member institutions, awarded $17.5 million in grants to assist 2,913 households. Projects in Arkansas were awarded $2.7 million in AHP grants in 2008.

"I am so pleased that Arvest has been able to work with the Federal Home Loan Bank (of Dallas) in obtaining the funding needed to help the NWRHDC move forward with this very important project. Because home prices and rental rates increased faster than income in recent decades, there is a serious need for affordable housing. This project will satisfy that need for a very deserving group," said Jim Johnson, commercial lender at Arvest.

Arvest Nationally Recognized by American Bankers Association

Monday, February 23 at 08:20 AM

Arvest Bank received national recognition for its contributions to the community at the American Bankers Association (ABA) National Conference for Community Bankers in Phoenix, Ariz. on Feb. 17. The bank was recognized for its efforts in the Building with Habitat for Humanity category.

In the spring of 2008, Arvest announced a three-year, quarter of a million dollar initiative known as ‘Built Together.’ Given the bank’s mission statement of ‘People helping people find financial solutions for life,’ this program was a natural fit for the bank to donate associate volunteer hours and monetary resources to make a difference in the communities it serves across Arkansas, Missouri and Oklahoma.

Arvest’s ‘Built Together’ is comprised of a 13-house plan that includes full construction of four homes and partial builds of nine others over a three-year time period that began in June 2008. During the first six months, 320 Arvest bankers, families and friends joined construction crews on eight different homes. In addition to the initial financial commitment, bank associates and customers at Arvest branches participated in paper brick sales as a fundraising drive throughout the summer, raising $90,000.

The ABA selection committee recognized 15 banks from across the country in various categories based on their innovation, creativity and effectiveness of the bank’s approach to making a difference in its community. Arvest was the only bank recognized for support of Habitat for Humanity.

“While it is wonderful to be recognized for hard work and an honor to accept this award at the conference on behalf of all the Arvest associates who have participated, this really is about providing homes for families in need” Tammy Kee, Senior Vice President at Arvest and coordinator of the ‘Built Together’ program, said. “Working with Habitat to help people in our communities have safe, solid homes is very closely aligned with what our bank is all about, so I think our associates and customers have really taken this program to heart, and that is why it has been such a success.”

Entries for awards were divided into seven categories including: Helping to Achieve Home Ownership, Encouraging Volunteerism, Fundraising for Foundations and Local Groups, Improving Financial Literacy, Reaching Out to the Underserved, Building with Habitat for Humanity and Revitalizing Your Community.

The ABA Community Bank Awards program was established in 2005 to recognize community banks’ outstanding charitable achievements.

Arvest’s‘Built Together’ continues in 2009 with full home builds in Oklahoma City, Okla., and Little Rock, Ark., and in 2010 with a full home in Northwest Arkansas and three partial builds in Bartlesville, Okla., Fort Smith, Ark., and Springfield, Mo.

"Can I use my Arvest check card for online purchases?"

Tuesday, February 17 at 12:07 PM

In short, YES.   You can use your Arvest Visa CheckCard to make purchases at hundreds of thousands of merchants around the world, including online merchants accepting Visa debit payments.  Not only can you make online purchases with your debit card, but you can also use your CheckCard for recurring payments for online memberships or subscriptions.

If you plan to use your Arvest Visa CheckCard for shopping online, please take note of the following:

Enroll your card with Verified by Visa.  This is a free, simple-to-use service that confirms your identity with an extra password when you make an online transaction with participating merchants. You must register your Arvest CheckCard at the Arvest Verified by Visa website.  Additional Verified by Visa information can be found on an earlier blog posting.

Use your card safely.  When shopping online and making a purchase, please make sure you are entering your card information on site that has a secured connection.  Generally a secure web area will have the closed lock icon and will have an "https" at the beginning of the web address for that page.  If you have any question as to the validity or security of the website, do not continue the purchase.  Monitor your account activity with Banking On the Net or Mobile Banking to watch for any unauthorized transactions.  If you see any unauthorized purchases or activity on your account, contact the bank immediately.

Take comfort in Visa Zero Liability protection.  Visa's Zero Liability policy is a guarantee that you won't be held responsible for fraudulent charges made with your card information.  If you notify your bank of a fraudulent transaction made with your debit card, either online or at a merchant, you are not liable for that purchase.  For more complete Verified by Visa information, visit the Visa website

Photos of Garrison Restoration and Transformation

Monday, February 16 at 11:06 AM

Arvest officially opened their Garrison Avenue Branch doors on January 26th of this year and recently celebrated with an open house attended by their downtown business neighbors, many Arvest associates as well as other organizations and people that played important roles in making this branch building possible.  The open house theme was “Treasure Downtown”.  Their branch shows how much pride they have in this branch with displays of historic Garrison Avenue in their entrance gallery that also includes some John Bell, Jr. prints of Garrison.

Arvest was able to completely refurbish the building, protecting the historical façade and keep the unique features of the building.  The new location is a full-service branch, including local lenders, with hours 7 a.m. – 7 p.m.  The second floor of the building is still under construction with anticipated completion to be the end of March 2009.  Upon completion, Arvest Asset Management and Arvest Equipment Finance departments will have offices located there.

Photos below show before and after views of the exterior and interior of the downtown location.
